Incubation in the Kwakiutl Band Office

The Coho eggs arrived last week to the Kwakiutl Band office. This will be the last year for the Incubation in the office. Believing the Kwigwis Daycare will benefit more by having them in the daycare. There is still opportunity for the Community to participate in the Annual fry release event. The annual fry release will be a special event again this year nearing the end of April.

As many members know, the tides are big for the next week. The shellfish relay crew will be putting some more polluted shellfish out in the next few days. This will be the third relay, and we have 17 samples to go. I will inform once again of the numbers of contaminates when The North Island laboratories sends the results.

I am going to end this newsletter with a portion from the “ The Douglas Treaty Fishing Rights”( Section 35)” Based on evidence of Our peoples use of the fishery in 1852,and the law, we understood out treaty right to include:

~The right to fish at locations where our people fished at the time of the Treaty

:

~the right to protect fisheries from damage, such as pollution

~The right to exclude others from harvesting our stationary fisheries to the extent that such harvesting interferes with our rights at these locations.
